The Pelham School District seeks to locate, evaluate and identify children between the ages of 2.5 and 22, residing in Pelham or attending a private school located in the District, who may have an educational disability. Any person may refer a child or young adult up to the age of 22 for evaluation. Reasons for referral include, but are not limited to the following:
- Failing to pass a hearing or vision screening.
- Unsatisfactory performance on group achievement or accountability measures.
- Receiving multiple academic or behavioral warnings or academic or behavior warnings or suspension or expulsion from a child care or after school program.
- Repeatedly failing one or more subjects.
- Inability to progress or participate in developmentally appropriate preschool activities
- Receiving service from family centered early support services.
The “Child Find” requirements of the District also applies to highly mobile children, including migrant children, homeless children, home schooled children, and children who are suspected of having an educational disability even though they are advancing from grade to grade.
Referrals may be initiated by contacting building principals or classroom teachers. Children who have not yet entered kindergarten may be referred through Pelham Elementary School.
In accord with Federal and State laws and regulations, Parents of students who attend private schools outside the geographical boundaries of Pelham should contact the district in which the private school is located in order to make a referral for evaluation.
