Title I FAQs

General Title I Program Questions

What is supplemental?

Teaching that completes or enhances the students learning/instruction. It is NOT Teaching the same as the classroom teacher. An example would be a student needs further instruction in reading fluency. The small group instruction would focus on that skill for the student's success.

What is Title I?

Title I is a federally funded program through the state that provides opportunities for children to acquire the knowledge and skills to meet the State proficiency standards. This purpose is accomplished in two ways: (1) by providing children supplemental support through enriched and accelerated education programs; and (2) by providing instructional personnel with substantial opportunities for professional development.

How does my child get into the PES Title I Program?

The classroom teacher contacts the parent about weakness in certain academic areas. The teacher completes a referral form which includes student iReady score and various questions on classroom performance. The referral is turned into the Title I project manager and the Title I team determines if the child qualifies based on their referral form scale score. The higher the score the bigger the need.

What is the difference between Title I and IEP?

Title I is a federally funded program to help students who have weaknesses and/or gaps in their achievement level. Title I targets reading and math support in and outside of the classroom. In Title I students are monitored through the Title I program and the Student Assistant Team (SAT) process. Goals are adjusted based on students progress throughout the school year. An IEP is an Individualized Education Plan that is created based on a special education identification and the plan meets their specific needs through various methods of services (Speech, OT, PT, Social Emotion, Academic Services).

Does Title I provide after school tutoring help?

Yes, although it is for students who are in the Title I program and it is on a rotation bases. During this time there are 2 tutors in the room that have intervention station set up as well as homework assistance. Kindergarten through Grade 2 is on Tuesdays and grades 3 through 5 is on Thursdays after school. This is on an invite bases and verification of enrollment is sent home prior to the start of the program.

My Child is Currently in the Title I Program

How is it determined if my child receives reading or math services?

We only service one academic area at one time. The classroom teacher looks at the student's overall performance and determines where the greater need is.

Can my child switch from Reading to Math Services?

Absolutely, although it is the same qualification process.

When does my child receive Title I services?

Students receive Title I services during their W.I.N time (What I Need).

How often does my child receive services?

That depends on the child's need. As the student progresses through the program the days may lessen as we are trying to graduate them from the program. There are times that we provide services in the classroom although the student is not missing any instructional time or face time with the classroom teacher.

How often are groups evaluated and changed throughout the school year?

Students are reviewed every 6-8 weeks. The Title I staff meets to discuss the progress of all students in the program and re-evaluates groups if needed. After the Tutors meet parents will receive notification of who their tutor is for the next 6-8 week cycle.

What is taught during Title I time?

Students in Title I are also in our SAT process (Student Assistance Team), this is the old RtI program. The SAT process establishes goals for each student based on their needs. This is communicated to the Title I team and lessons are built off of their goals to meet their specific needs.

Is my child in Title I through the entire grade or through elementary school?

No, our goal is graduate students from the program as we see their continually success.

How do I know how my child is doing with Title I support?

Title I sends a progress report home with the report card each trimester. Parent can also reach out to their child's classroom teacher or to their Title I Tutor. The Title I tutors communicate weekly with the classroom teacher about what they are working on and student progress.

My Child has Graduated

How is it determined if my child graduates from Title I services?

Once the Title I staff sees that a student is making progress, they will lessen the services that a child receives (example: if receiving 5 days a week may be reduced to 2 days a week). If with the reduction of services the student continues to make progress and achieving their goals within Title I they may graduate from the program.

What if my child graduates and starts to fall behind again?

Title I works on a 6-8 week intervention cycle throughout the school year and we are always changing groups to meet student needs. Students can qualify at any time even they graduated previously from the program.

My Child is Going to Middle School

My child is currently in Title I & I know this isn't at PMS, what is in place for my child's needs?

Pelham Memorial School has a W.I.N period (What I Need) where the student can seek help from teachers at the students discretion. They also have a literacy block during the school day in which the students go to a certain teacher based on need to intervene or enhance their skills. These groups are established by the teachers and rotated on a 6-8 week intervention cycle based on student progress.

Does the PES Title I program share with PMS the students progress and goals?

PES has a Student Assistance Team (SAT) which monitors student progress and establishes goals for students to work. Each child within the SAT process has a folder that goes up to PMS for the teachers to use as a resource to get to know the student and move forward on student goals.
