Math Department--About Us

To provide quality math instruction is the PHS mathematics department’s constant goal, which will increase student confidence and curiosity. We’ve calculated how to provide a supportive environment where students can discuss the reasonableness of a solution, persevere through a series of challenges, and achieve mathematical literacy.  Our instructional equation includes the applications of the skills in real life scenarios and the proofs of important theorems and formulas. As part of our  algorithm of our students achieving 21st century skills, our teachers factor technology into their instruction through the use of chromebooks and calculators. Our function is to help students to understand the importance of technology in supporting the linear growth of their mathematical domain.
Our students begin their mathematics education with courses in Algebra and Geometry, which are the roots for all other math courses. After completing Algebra 2, students can choose to spend the remainder of their time at PHS exploring applications of Algebra, Statistics, Trigonometry, PreCalculus, or completing other math intensive courses.   For students who have an angle for more rigor and an in depth learning experience, we have divided our courses to offer Level 1 and Honors classes in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus. Plus, we offer AP and college credit Statistics and Calculus. As an elective for upperclassmen, there is Introduction to Programming with Python, which equals the combination of prior knowledge of mathematics and the basics of this programming language.
Outside of the quadrilateral classroom, students who have completed Geometry and Algebra 2, with the plan of continuing to take advanced math courses, are welcome and encouraged to apply to the Math Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, which is the national high school and two year college math honor society. One of the goals for this society is to increase appreciation for and understanding of mathematics, and they volunteer to distribute their time to assist students and teachers within the district.
